Alternative Media in Chicago Journalism Ecosystem
Independent and alternative media outlets have helped diversify news coverage through independent outlets that focus on local issues or communities. These smaller organizations are often focused on a particular group or issue in a given issue area. A small group may decide on your editorial decisions, and they often lack the resources or capacity necessary to hire professional journalists. Delegates from these groups are often also involved in social activism. Their work tends to be activist by nature and adheres often to the normative social movement theories, which emphasize deliberative democratic involvement as well providing alternative narratives for marginalized voice.

It is important at this critical time to understand how political situations shape the values and organizational practices they support. This special issue contains papers that shed light on the process of transformation.

How media are understood is heavily influenced by political systems. Different political theories present differing conceptions of democracy, public spheres, and the ways these outlets should function which in turn determine their interpretation (Holt et al. 2019; Figenschou and Frischlich 2019). Researchers may emphasize the importance of citizen media, which promotes participation in democratic processes. Others focus on diversity and media coverage as a way to counter ideologic hegemony.

Another important question about alternative media is the definition. Some authors use a relational frame to characterize alternative media as self-proclaimed correctives which challenge dominant discourses (Harlow, 2022). Other scholars adopt an analytical frame in order study the differences between this form of media and mainstream media.

Aslan Ozgul and Veneti (2022) investigate how organizational structures and internal power relations of large-scale alternative news projects in Turkey and Greece change with their expansion, finding that while some retain a collective and participatory culture as they expand staff numbers and content output. This change, according to their study, may affect whether these initiatives keep their "alternativeness", or become more like professional actors.

This project serves as a model for other organizations who are seeking to serve as the bridge for civic engagement that our city's mainstream media has either failed to provide or refused.
