Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

They are only recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby will be ready to be moved to the bed.

MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features an adjustable bassinet that you can use in the home and a manual rocking function. It was simple to put together and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However they are typically used for children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard that can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. If you want your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in a bigger cot, it's a good option to select the larger one.

Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses' basket but still not too big for the room of her baby bedside crib. It's easy to lift her baby in and out for night feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the home, and it's rocking too. It also comes with an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside, choose one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able to be lower away from the way, so that you can pull your child towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher height to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option and one of our mum test subjects saying that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to press down at the touch of one button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet should only be used until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided generally about 6 months. This is due to the danger of being suffocated. It's also important to note that if you select a bedside cosleeper sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib and vice versa, you must remove the sides as soon as your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't climb out or get out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of bedside crib that range from basic to lavish. The more luxurious options may include features such as an integrated night light and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe baby back to sleep, or even an adjustable base that allows you to easily get your baby's food in the right place. Certain models can be converted into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best bedside cots Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that allows you to pick up your baby and move them to the other side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This makes it ideal for new mothers who are recovering from Caesarean or need to stay in bed for longer durations of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby easier especially after a c-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also is equipped with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's bigger than the other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds up into its travel bedside crib bag to make it compact when not in use.

MFM mum home test Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, she explained how it was created with the needs of parents and children in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly maneuverable and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A Large Bedside Cot (Vuf.Minagricultura.Gov.Co)'s main safety characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. You should choose a design which lets you lower the bed's side with a single button press. This will allow you to lift your child up without getting out of the bed. This is important, especially as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that increases the risk of suffocation or injury, including pillows and duvets, which can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that these products meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However the CPSC found that these requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the incidents reported in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other types of equipment, like bassinets or play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using a removable attachment. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
