Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor Audi tt key fob is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find, especially if you're looking at a Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi spare key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
