In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
