Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

There are a variety of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item will receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. The Jeweler is able to create all kinds of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones that require a certain level to get. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. You are able to replace the jewel once within an Item Upgrader Mod of equipment.

The use of more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is typically performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels create an area that is stronger than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and evasion. Then, they can acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same manner to the way a player can acquire armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be used in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This lets a hero be more efficient when they are not active. It can also compensate for the absence of strong slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by a hero's top stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is particularly true if an Best item upgrader has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.
