Upgrades to items are a method to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players a chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves and is therefore more valuable in early game runs as opposed to later ones, since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability that increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item if it fails.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an item can be affected by the Luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
