Mazda-3D-Black.pngHow to Replace an audi tt Replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and audi key fob not working a3 key (https://bookmarksurl.com) requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the audi tt key case of the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the audi tt key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

SEAT-Logo-2019.jpgThe G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a typical part across the new audi keys 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
