How to Replace an audi q7 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

Porsche-New-2023.pngThe sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

Mercedes-Benz-3D-Star.pngIf this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. 5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues with your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi key programming, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49.
