How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

286708_Volvo_Iron_Mark.jpg?In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your car. It is a crucial part of the audi a1 key replacement's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor key for audi failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a typical part across the audi keyfob 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
