Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Discourse Construction Tests

The discourse completion test (DCT) is a widely used instrument in pragmatic research. It has many strengths, but it also has a few drawbacks. The DCT is one example. It does not take into account individual and cultural variations. The DCT can also be biased and can lead to overgeneralizations. This is why it should be analyzed carefully prior to using it for research or assessment purposes.

Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a useful tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to influence social variables that affect politeness can be a strength. This feature can be used to study the role of prosody across cultural contexts.

In the field of linguistics, DCT is among the most useful tools to study the behavior of communication learners. This study explored Chinese learners' pragmatic decisions regarding their use of Korean by using a range of experimental tools, including Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) as well as metapragmatic questionnaires and Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to MQs and 프라그마틱 사이트 DCTs. They were also required to provide reflections on their opinions and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs often chose to reject native Korean norms of pragmatism. Their choices were influenced by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing life histories and their relational affordances. The MQ data were analysed to identify the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data were classified according to Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the choices made by the participants with their linguistic performance on DCTs to determine if they are indicative of pragmatic resistance. The findings of the MQs and DCTs were then examined using descriptive statistics and z-tests. The RIs were recorded and transcribing, and then coded by two coders from different companies. The coding was an iterative process in which the coders listened and discussed each transcript. The results of the coding process were contrasted with the original RI transcripts, which provided an indication of how well the RIs were able to capture the fundamental behaviors.

Interviews for refusal

The key question in pragmatic research is: Why do certain learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? A recent study attempted to answer this question by employing a variety of research instruments, including DCTs MQs, DCTs, and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their native language and complete the MQs either in their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were asked to reflect on and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the patterns of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this even when they could produce patterns that resembled natives. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their choice to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors such as relational advantages. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors helped facilitate a more relaxed performance with respect to the linguistic and intercultural standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or consequences they could face if their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their native friends would consider them "foreigners" and think they are unintelligent. This worry was similar to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the default preference of Korean learners. They could still be useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for 프라그마틱 future researchers to reassess their usefulness in particular situations and in various cultural contexts. This will allow them to better know how different cultures may impact the pragmatic behavior of learners in the classroom and beyond.
