In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your car. It's a vital component of your audi a3 keys key shell (try privatehd.org)'s transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the audi keyless entry 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
