South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist inclinations. It's still better than was expected.

Origins

Policy and academic analysts are in a tense debate about the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards an entirely new model of economic governance. This article analyzes the five phases of the Korean evolution in terms of its political development that include illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies the key elements that are the driving force behind these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. The creationists have been successful in promoting their views to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly one-third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs. 17% said they did not understand it. This level of doubt is comparable to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event drew an impressive crowd of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely covered in national newspapers, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and was well-received by the public.

KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group reported on its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of film strips and slides from ICR and also some books on creationism which were published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

One example of an KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, enough students were interested in creationism that they raised the funds and support to construct a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine called CREATION. The magazine covers a variety of topics that pertain to the science of creation. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also organized a network of local branches that hold seminars and provide talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. In this period the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the general public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers as well as other instruments.

Korea's new development paradigm is being developed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The main challenge for the new regime is to find a balance between state-led and market-oriented economic policies.
